“Dream Again Thrift Emporium” was a new startup, and accordingly had a unique set of challenges throughout the build. Once we received the go ahead from Tara Johnson, the Executive Director of the Devereux Center and their Board, we began planning for each step of the process. The right building with a suitable lease had to be found, the lease negotiated, laborers had to be acquired, the interior design had to be developed, building materials procured, timelines agreed on, branding design work done, demolition done, colors pick out, flooring chosen, in-store merchandising racks and counters ordered, lighting ordered, and contractors procured.

The exterior of our building had to be completely replaced, and many hours were spent designing our new store front. Matching funds were procured from the City of North Bend for the remodeling of the store front, and plans had to be drawn up and approved by the city planning board prior to beginning work. Once approval had been given, a local contractor was chosen, and work on the front of the building began. Our goal was to return the storefront as closely as possible to its original appearance. A few changes were made, for example the brick facade on the front, to enhance the design.

The interior of the store had to be demolished, and work began immediately on that stage of the rebuild. Ceiling tiles and structural supports were removed, cloth ceiling covering removed, and thousands of nails and staples removed. All sheetrock on the walls were removed, the paneling under that removed, and old cloth wallpaper removed. Any wood that was to damaged to keep was removed, and repurposed to use at a later date. Damaged trim and baseboards were removed, and a false floor was installed to get the floor level and ready for new laminate planks.

We were able to find some old barnwood for a great price, and re-covered a large section of the back floor with that. Wood that had been saved from the initial demolition stage was used to clad the back walls, frame the doors and build a porch. A hearth was built to house a large electric fireplace and mantle, and burlap was draped across the ceilings in the back to complete the look.
